Berlin, Germany, March 20th, 2010-u²t Photonics AG, the provider of innovative, leading edge optoelectronic components such as highly functional integrated receivers and modulators, today announced the availability of its integrated DQPSK receiver for long-haul 43 Gbit/s communication systems. u²t is now sampling this new product for system level testing to both, sub-system and equipment manufacturers.

The QPRV1010A receiver consists of two balanced receivers implemented in a single, ultra compact package reducing the required board space by 70%. The use of bend-insensitive ribbon fiber, such as the Draka Bendbright Elite Fiber Ribbon, allows for tight routing and precise skew control of the connection between the DQPSK-demodulator and the receiver. A co-planar electrical interface avoids the need for rf-cables which significantly reduces cost and matches the newly available SERDES IC´s supporting a surface-mount interface. The use of a TIA with a linear output signal also enables transponder and system designers to further improve the overall system performance by using EDC (Electronic Dispersion Compensation) technologies. The receiver provides two sensitive peak level detectors for convenient feedback control of the demodulator.

"This new product enhances our portfolio of highly integrated and very compact solutions", said Jens Fiedler, VP Sales and Marketing at u²t, "We are convinced that components such as our QPRV1010A further reduce the overall cost for 40 Gbit/s systems and help our customers to accomplish a very efficient system design."

u²t announced the availability of prototypes of its new product platform starting in March this year.
u²t Photonics AG today announced that it has acquired the assets of a high speed GaAs Optical Modulator business based in the United Kingdom for an undisclosed sum.

GaAs modulator technology is seen as a key in the cost effective deployment of 40 and 100G fiber optic communication systems to meet the ever increasing demands for global internet traffic. Since GaAs can utilize 6" wafer processing capabilities the process control available can be much better than that employed for the smaller wafer sizes usually employed for optoelectronic components used in optical communications applications. This will in turn enable higher levels of monolithic integration in GaAs enabling the high performance and cost effective components that are required for the complex modulation schemes that 40 and 100G systems will need.

This acquisition will add to u²t's strong capability in 40 and 100G optical communication products which are amongst the fastest growing areas in the optical networking market. u²t expects the addition of the GaAs modulator business to strengthen their product offering which already has leading edge 40 and 100G receiver and detector products.

With this acquisition u²t gains access to GaAs based optical components and adds another platform to its technology portfolio. u²t will continue its close partnership with Heinrich-Hertz-Institut in Berlin on components based on InP technology, enabling the exploitation of whichever material system is best suited for each application.

"We are very excited about the acquisition of the GaAs Optical Modulator business since we see very strong synergies with our existing 40 and 100G receiver products" said Andreas Umbach, the Chief Executive Officer of u²t. "It will allow us to enhance our offering by delivering high performance yet cost effective transmitter functionality. I was encouraged by the experience and capabilities of the team and their enthusiastic reaction to the acquisition."

The new product series comprises u²t's well established balanced receiver technology in combination with Kylia's delay line interferometer technology based on free-space optics. The compact new receiver eases the design of DPSK systems by reducing the foot-print of the optical front-end and avoiding the critical fibre routing and component matching required when using discrete components. Transponder and system manufactures are enabled to build smaller form factor sub-systems and therefore to further reduce size, power and cost of 40 G systems.

The product has been specified in close cooperation with leading transponder and line card manufacturers and it will be offered in different variants and with optional features allowing for special customer requirements.

In order to quickly develop this new product generation and to support the fast growing demand the two companies entered into a cooperation earlier this year and are working closely together utilizing both companies' know how, expertise and strengths in the most efficient way. Kylia's free space optics technology is used in a variety of stand alone products such as delay line interferometers for DPSK applications and 90° Hybrids for coherent detection. u²t's balanced technology is widely used in the DPSK deployment.

Both companies are committed to complete this new development and to finish qualification early 2009.

"This integration between so different technologies is now possible thanks to leaps forward in the micro optic assembly process domain", said Frederic Verluise, Kylia's CEO , "Now this innovative integrated optical receiver opens the door to many compactness-driven complex optoelectronics modules such as integrated coherent receivers"

"With flexibility on both sides we have achieved an amazingly fast progress in our joint activity", said Jens Fiedler, VP Sales & Marketing at u2t, "resulting in provision of this new platform just at the time of DPSK technology transition from line card to transponder solutions. It will help to significantly reduce our customers' design effort, to save board space and to obsolete fibre routing between DLI and balanced receiver."

u²t announced the availability of prototypes of its new product platform starting now. The IDRV series is targeted for volume production in the first half of 2009 and will offer a price benefit against the discrete solutions when delivered in volume. The product will be demonstrated at this year's ECOC, 22nd to 24th September in Brussels at u²t's booth #188.
